History of Hopelands Preparatory School

Hopelands Preparatory School was founded in 1954 by Mrs Eva Murray-Browne, who, having four children of her own saw a need for an affordable, high quality and local educational establishment. Her vision was of a school that encouraged pupils to learn together in an environment of strong family values with emphasis on inclusion for all.

The school retained that ethos of traditional learning and grew from just fifteen pupils, being taught around the dining room table, to its current size of over seventy children ranging from three to eleven years of age.

The school set its objective to help children thrive and give each individual the opportunity to reach their full potential. Hopelands Preparatory School pupils have adopted this ambition and in Year Six the majority of children are successful in gaining a place at the grammar school of their choice. A number of pupils are offered scholarships within the private sector.

As a non-selective school, this success is derived from inspired teaching and the children striving to do their best in all areas of school life, be it in the classroom, on the sports field or on stage.

We truly believe that the vision of Mrs Murray-Browne and her hopes for children developed over fifty years ago still followed today.
